Eggnog cocktail next to Christmas tree

I had all these grand plans to make homemade eggnog this year. I was going to make it with the whites from our duck eggs, and it was going to be glorious. But life happened, and besides, this #12DaysOfChristmas is all about easy, and most homemade eggnog recipes aren’t exactly easy. This Bourbon Amaretto Eggnog Cocktail is, thanks to store-bought eggnog. It’s as simple as shaking two glugs of amaretto and bourbon with eggnog and garnishing with a little spice. How easy is that?

Although I wouldn’t advise making this for a Christmas open-house party because that will discount the easy part (who has time to shake thirty-plus cocktails to order?), it would be ideal for a small get-together. I served it to eight at my annual girls’ group Secret Santa exchange, and it was a hit. Nutty amaretto and spicy bourbon pair perfectly together to complement the eggnog’s richness. This cocktail doesn’t necessarily need anything else, but a garnish of cinnamon or nutmeg makes the drink polished and pretty.

In the making of this Bourbon Amaretto Eggnog Cocktail, I sampled a lot of store-bought offerings of eggnog. Publix Organic Greenwise brand won out for its thick richness, although if you’re not shaking it with ice, I’d say it’s almost too thick to drink straight. Go for a thinner brand like Southern Comfort, if you’re planning on drinking it unadulterated.
